Polls Show Tight Race Between Harris and Trump in Southern Battleground States

Online report
31 October 2024

Neither Vice President Kamala Harris nor former President Donald Trump has established a clear advantage in Georgia and North Carolina, according to new CNN polls conducted by SSRS. In Georgia, likely voters are nearly evenly split, with Trump at 48% and Harris at 47%. Similarly, in North Carolina, Harris leads slightly with 48% compared to Trump’s 47%. Both results fall within the margin of error, indicating no definitive leader.

These states are pivotal in the upcoming presidential election. North Carolina has historically leaned Republican, having voted for Trump in 2020 by a narrow margin. Meanwhile, Georgia, which flipped for Joe Biden in 2020, is also highly contested, marking a significant shift in its electoral landscape.

Polling shows stability since previous surveys, with 95% of likely voters indicating they have made their decisions. Early voting trends reveal that over half of voters in both states have already cast their ballots, showing a preference for Harris by slight margins.

As the election approaches, both candidates face a closely contested environment in these critical battlegrounds.

Harris Holds Slim Lead in Key Blue Wall States

Online report
30 October 2024

Vice President Kamala Harris retains a narrow lead in two critical "blue wall" states, crucial for her potential Electoral College victory over former President Donald Trump, according to recent CNN polls conducted by SSRS.

In Michigan, Harris leads Trump 48% to 43% among likely voters, while in Wisconsin, she holds a stronger advantage with 51% support compared to Trump’s 45%. The race in Pennsylvania is tighter, with both candidates tied at 48%, making it the largest electoral prize of the three states.

These states, which favored Trump in 2016 but were won by President Joe Biden in 2020, remain pivotal for both campaigns. Notably, of the seven states classified as tossups by CNN, only Michigan and Wisconsin still include Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. on the ballot—he suspended his independent campaign and endorsed Trump, currently holding 3% support in Michigan and 1% in Wisconsin.

Overall, Michigan shows the highest support for third-party candidates, with 6% of likely voters backing options beyond Harris and Trump. However, among highly motivated voters, support for Harris increases, with 51% backing her in Michigan and 52% in Wisconsin.

These results closely mirror earlier polling conducted in late summer, indicating Harris’s ongoing lead in both states, while the competition remains fierce in Pennsylvania.

Third-Party Candidates' Impact on 2024 Presidential Race

In a significant shift within the presidential race, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., the former independent candidate, has suspended his bid and endorsed Donald Trump. This move may influence the dynamics in key battleground states.

Current polling shows Kennedy at 3% support in Michigan and just 1% in Wisconsin. Notably, Michigan exhibits the highest overall backing for third-party candidates, with 6% of likely voters favoring options beyond Kamala Harris and Trump. However, enthusiasm for independent candidates wanes among the most motivated voters, where Harris leads Trump 51% to 45% in Michigan and 52% to 47% in Wisconsin.

The latest CNN polling mirrors earlier results, revealing Harris ahead with 50% to Trump's 44% in Wisconsin and 48% to 43% in Michigan. In Pennsylvania, the candidates are virtually tied at 50% for Harris and 47% for Trump.

As Election Day approaches, the majority of voters in these critical blue wall states have solidified their preferences, with only 8% in Pennsylvania, 7% in Michigan, and 6% in Wisconsin remaining undecided or open to changing their votes.
