WASHINGTON, D.C. — The United Kingdom’s National Minimum Wage and National Living Wage, alongside the United States’ federal and state minimum rates, remain focal points for policymakers and investors as governments grapple with inflation, labour shortages and corporate cost structures.

In the United Kingdom, the National Living Wage for workers aged 23 and over rose to £10.42 per hour on 1 April 2024, while the National Minimum Wage for ages 21‑22 sits at £10.18, £8.91 for 18‑20 and £5.28 for apprentices. The Treasury says the increases are designed to keep pace with the Consumer Price Index, which ran at 4.9% year‑on‑year in March.

KEY POINTIn the United Kingdom, the National Living Wage for workers aged 23 and over rose to £10.

In the United States, the federal minimum wage has been frozen at $7.25 an hour since July 2009. However, 29 states and the District of Columbia have enacted higher floors, with California’s statewide minimum at $15.50 for large employers and New York’s at $15.00. The Economic Policy Institute estimates that 2.1 million workers earn the federal floor, a figure that has drawn renewed congressional scrutiny.

“Raising the floor wages in major economies reshapes labor cost models and forces multinational firms to reassess pricing strategies,” said Dr. Elena Morales, senior economist at the Global Trade Institute. “Investors watch these moves closely because they can compress profit margins, especially in low‑margin sectors such as retail and hospitality.”

Equity analysts note that companies with significant exposure to minimum‑wage workers may see earnings forecasts adjusted upward for wage‑inflation risk. For instance, the S&P 500 Consumer Discretionary index has been trimmed by an average of 0.8% in recent earnings guidance revisions. Meanwhile, firms that have adopted wage‑setting automation or upskilling programs are positioned to mitigate the impact, attracting ESG‑focused capital.
