WASHINGTON, D.C. — Milcho Manchevski, the North Macedonian filmmaker whose 1994 debut *Before the Rain* won the Venice Golden Lion and earned an Oscar nomination, is back in the competitive slate at the 2024 Tokyo International Film Festival with his long‑delayed dark comedy *Sister Brother Manhole Cover*.
Manchevski withdrew the project in 2019 after publicly accusing the Macedonian Film Fund of embezzlement and nepotism, allegations that prompted a parliamentary inquiry. The dispute halted funding for the $2.1 million production, leaving the script unfinished and the cast on hold for more than three years.
The film follows three siblings who inherit a dilapidated manhole cover that inexplicably predicts the weather, a premise Manchevski describes as “a satire of bureaucratic absurdity and the erosion of aesthetic values.” He told *Variety* that the story reflects what he calls the “death of beauty” in contemporary cinema.
Tokyo’s main competition this year features 12 international titles selected from a record 1,284 submissions, many of which employed AI‑driven editing or script‑generation tools. Festival organizers said the influx of AI‑enhanced productions is prompting a review of eligibility criteria, echoing similar moves at Cannes and Berlin, where enterprise software firms are now sponsoring selection panels.
If *Sister Brother Manhole Cover* secures a prize, the $2.1 million budget could unlock additional financing for Macedonian filmmakers, a sector that contributed €15 million to the national economy in 2022. Industry analysts note that festival recognition often translates into distribution deals worth up to three times the original production cost.
Key Takeaways
- Manchevski’s film returns to competition after a five‑year hiatus caused by a corruption dispute.
- The Tokyo International Film Festival received a record 1,284 entries, highlighting growing AI integration in filmmaking.
- A potential award could boost Macedonian cinema financing by up to 300 % through new distribution agreements.
Regardless of the outcome, Manchevski’s return spotlights the intersection of artistic dissent, emerging technology and the high‑stakes arena of global film festivals, underscoring how creators navigate both creative and corporate currents in today’s digital cinema landscape.
The article correctly states that *Before the Rain* won the Venice Golden Lion in 1994 and received an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. Tokyo International Film Festival’s 2024 competition did list *Sister Brother Manhole Cover* among its
